Microsoft has talked about the existence of Windows 10 version 21H1 publicly for the very first time, though for the time being, no specifics on the actual ETA of this new feature update have been provided.

Everybody knew Windows 10 21H1 was coming, but Microsoft has until now been trying to keep all details secret, so the company confirming this new feature update is something that serves as a little surprise for most of us.

“The Windows 10, version 21H1 release will not bring updates to the Windows Hardware Compatibility Program and will follow the same guidelines as 20H2. Below are more details with respect to all WHCP-related activities,” Microsoft explains in a blog post published this week and detailing the Windows Hardware Compatibility Program activities in Windows 10 version 21H1.

Just a small update

Windows 10 version 21H1 will be quite a small update, coming in the form of a typical cumulative update with the focus on under the hood improvements and less on new features.

This is something a little bit surprising given the previous update used a similar approach, but this time Microsoft is making some pretty big changes to its release schedule.

The spring release, which has until now been used for major Windows 10 feature updates, switches to a minor update because of the arrival of Windows 10X, which is also supposed to happen in the spring. Microsoft thus wants the next major feature update for the desktop version of Windows 10 to go live in the fall, thus using the spring release for just a small pack of improvements.

For the time being, however, Microsoft itself hasn’t confirmed Windows 10 21H1 would be a small release, but more information should surface soon as we approach the official launch date in the spring.
