Microsoft has just announced a new major update for the Office productivity suite on iPhone, and this time, the number one change is the addition of Fluent improvements.

The Fluent design language is one of the things users like the most in modern Windows versions, so by bringing it to Microsoft Office on iPhone, the company creates more consistency in its products across multiple devices.

Microsoft explains in the official announcement that thanks to the new update, Microsoft Office is able to provide iPhone users not only with a more modern look, but also with a cleaner and simplified experience.

“These updates bring a modern look and feel to the contextual command bar and ribbon palette when working with documents, presentations, and worksheets on your iPhone. The new cleaner and simplified experience includes: A visual update of both the contextual command bar and ribbon palette to align with Microsoft’s Fluent design, implemented using our open source components; More performant menus on the contextual command bar that open faster and are resizable,” the company says.

While the feature is currently rolling out to users out there in stages, the Fluent design update is live only for insiders running Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Version 2.67 build 22110700 must be installed, but of course, any later version would do it as well.

“To try out the updated contextual command bar and ribbon palette, just open a Word document, PowerPoint presentation, or Excel worksheet, and start editing its content. The contextual command bar is at the bottom of the screen or at top of your iPhone’s onscreen keyboard. It offers a list of commands that are most relevant based on your current selection,” Microsoft says.

Of course, it should all be just a matter of time until the same improvements go live for production devices.
