Microsoft’s unified Office app, which brings all productivity apps under one roof without the need for downloading them separately, has received a highly anticipated update on Android.

The app now features a dark mode on Google’s mobile operating system, with Microsoft explaining this has long been a top request from the user community.

Dark modes have become a common thing in the software industry, with pretty much every big app and platform featuring such a visual style. Microsoft obviously has been in a rush to update all of its products with dark modes, and the company has included such updates not only in desktop and mobile apps, but also on the web for services that can be accessed from a browser.

The release of a dark mode for the Office app is good news for users, as the app can finally align with the rest of the operating system Android devices where this visual mode is used.

“The Office app helps you get work done on a mobile device by combining Word, Excel, and PowerPoint into a single app and adding many rich capabilities for creating and working with PDFs, images, scanning, capturing notes, and much more. Now you can do all this using a theme of your choice — based on the time of day, your surroundings, or your device settings. Dark Mode ensures that you can adjust the Office app to low-light environments, while providing you with better viewing options and keeping battery consumption low,” Microsoft explains.

Just as expected, if you’re already using the dark mode on Android on your device, the Office app automatically switches to the same visual style for a more consistent experience.

But at the same time, the app also offers manual controls to let you choose if you want to use the dark or the light mode independent from the rest of the phone.
