Windows 10 version 1909 could be a one-of-a-kind release

Windows 10 version 1909, or November 2019 Update, was released earlier this month as a much lighter update as compared to its predecessors.

Many described it as “a little bit more than a service pack,” which certainly makes sense given that the number of new features is rather small and version 1909 is all about small improvements here and there.

In other words, Microsoft’s 2019 feature update strategy for Windows 10 included one major release, which is called Windows 10 version 1903 or May 2019 Update, and one minor update that landed as version 1903.

Going forward, many thought this would be the right approach for Windows 10 in the long term, especially because shipping two major feature updates every year raise other challenges for both Microsoft and users. As compared to the previous feature update, Windows 10 version 1909 installs much smoother, mostly because of this “regular” quality update approach.

“Pilot program”

Microsoft, however, doesn’t want to stick with this existing approach for Windows 10, and the company explained in a presentation on Mixer recently (via WL) that version 1909 could be the only minor update for Windows 10 that is released.

“Delivering the 19H2 feature update via cumulative update and an enablement package is a pilot program. There isn't a formal plan in place to deliver future releases in the same way. We are closely monitoring feedback and hoping to learn from this type of release to help influence our future plans,” Microsoft explained.

However, Microsoft does suggest that this could change in the coming years and it’s all based on user feedback. The next feature update for Windows 10 is a major release, due in the spring of 2020 and bringing plenty of new features, along with a plethora of changes under the hood.
