Recommended content making its way to File Explorer

Microsoft’s way of promoting what it calls recommended content (or as many people describe them, ads) has been rather controversial for Windows 11 users so far.

After all, nobody wants Microsoft to show suggestions for sites or apps on their devices, but even so, the software giant seems to be insisting on this highly criticized approach.

The latest idea the software giant is apparently trying to implement in Windows 11 is aimed at File Explorer. After turning File Explorer into the file manager everybody loves again (thanks to the addition of support for tabs), Microsoft is now planning to ruin the entire experience with the addition of so-called recommended content.

Twitter user XenoPanther discovered a new feature that would be added to the file manager. Called “show recommended content,” this new option isn’t yet available in the production builds of Windows 11, but it should make its way to the Insider program sooner rather than later.

How exactly it is going to work is still unclear, but without a doubt, having recommended content in File Explorer is unlikely to be received well by users out there.

Hopefully, users will make themselves heard once again. As emphasized by Neowin, Microsoft has recently decided to drop one such controversial idea, as the company planned to bring recommended content to the Start menu.

“We are removing the suggestion action for searching copied text in Microsoft Edge and showing recommend common websites on the Recommended section in Start – both of which began rolling out with Build 25247. Thanks to all the Insiders who gave us feedback on these two experiences. As a reminder, features and experiences we try out in the Dev Channel may get removed and never released beyond the Dev Channel as we incubate new ideas and get feedback from Insiders,” Microsoft said in the release notes of the latest preview build.
