Redmond extends support for Anniversary Update

Windows 10 Mobile is currently in maintenance mode, and Microsoft plans to discontinue the platform next year when support for the last version of the operating system would be pulled.

In the meantime, Windows 10 Mobile Anniversary Update (version 1607) was supposed to go dark this month, only that as it turns out, Microsoft has decided to extend the support for one more year.

In a technical document published on its website, Microsoft reveals that Windows 10 Mobile version 1607 will continue to get updates until October 2019.

The more awkward thing is that Microsoft talks about the October 2019 target date as if it already happened, so there is a chance that this is just a typo and nothing more. If this is the case, support for the Anniversary Update release of Windows 10 Mobile came to an end on October 9 this year.

Just a typo, maybe?

“Microsoft ended support on October 9, 2019 for the following editions which were released in August 2016 (version 1607): Windows 10 Mobile [and] Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise,” Microsoft says on this page.

“This means that users are no longer eligible to receive new security updates, non-security updates, or free assisted support options. Customers who contact Microsoft Support will be directed to update to the latest version of Windows 10 Mobile to remain supported.”

While this can be just an error, keeping Windows 10 Mobile Anniversary Update for a little bit longer does make sense, as this is currently the most used version of Microsoft’s mobile operating system. The company then pulled support for most of its devices in the next release, and the Anniversary Update was the last update that the majority of phones received.

We’ve reached out to Microsoft to check if this is an error or not and will update the article when an answer is provided.
