The phone will be launched in addition to the Surface phone

Although Microsoft changed its marketing strategy last year to launch much fewer Lumia smartphones each year, it doesn't mean that we won't see at least a handful of devices coming from the Redmond-based company.

One of the most anticipated Windows Phones that might be launched this year, the Surface phone won't come alone. The powerful device will co-exist with another top-tier Windows 10 handset that will be released in Q2-Q3 2016.

The folks over at NPU managed to get their hands on a prototype unit that suggests Microsoft plans to release a flagship smartphone, other than the Surface phone, in the coming months.

The device doesn't have a name yet, but it's a Lumia smartphone that features a metal frame body. It's also worth mentioning that the prototype is now tested in India and other countries and that some of the specs might change by the time it goes official.

Windows 10 Mobile Redstone 1 comes preloaded

Moving on to specs, this Lumia flagship smartphone packs an iris scanner and a large 5.5-inch capacitive touchscreen display that supports Quad HD (2560 x 1440 pixels) resolution.

At the back, the device features a 20-megapixel camera, while in the front there's a secondary 8-megapixel camera for selfies and video calls.

Hardware-wise, the unannounced Lumia smartphone comes equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, coupled with an Adreno 530 graphics processing unit and 4GB of RAM.

On the inside, the smartphone might pack either 16 or 32GB of storage, but it's worth mentioning the prototype unit has only 16GB of internal memory. Also, there's no mention of microSD card slot for memory expansion, though we doubt that it won't come with one.

Last but not least, the Lumia smartphone will most likely ship with Windows 10 Mobile Redstone 1 operating system right out of the box.

Even though the flagship device was initially expected to arrive in Q3, Microsoft is now looking to bring this Lumia smartphone to market slightly earlier, so there's a high chance the handset will be announced in Q2 2016.
