Both smartphones appear as sold out in many countries

Many Windows Phone fans haven't been able to get a new Lumia 950 or Lumia 950 XL because they have been sold out in their countries. Some did manage to pre-order one or the other, but still have to wait a week or so to receive their smartphones.

The first reaction to Lumia 950 XL being sold out at Microsoft Store in the United States and Canada would be one of relief for Windows Phone fans.

The Redmond-based company will finally have two flagship smartphones that will sell by the millions in the next couple of months, which would guarantee the success of future Windows 10 Mobile devices.

Unfortunately, this might be a marketing strategy that both BlackBerry and Microsoft seem to employ to increase the hype around their new products.

The unlocked versions Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL already sold out in the US a few times by now, which raises two questions, either Microsoft wasn't ready to meet the high demand, or this is just a marketing stunt meant to raise customer awareness.

“Sold out” is not a recipe for success

Both Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL make headlines every time they appear sold out in a particular country, one or two days after the devices were launched.

That's what Microsoft wants, free advertising of its smartphones even though they might not sell as well as one would expect by reading these headlines.

Obviously, we won't know for sure until Microsoft comes forward with the official numbers, but if these numbers are high, it means the company's strategy was successful.

Still, considering the fact that Microsoft is not supporting the launch of Lumia 950/950 XL with a strong marketing campaign, it would be surprising if these smartphones would sell as well as the company wants us to believe.

Yes, Windows Phone fans are upgrading to Lumia 950/950 XL, but this is no reason for joy for Microsoft as few Android/iOS fans are inclined to switch to these smartphones. And here is where the market share is coming from.

We're preparing our own Lumia 950 XL review, which should be published sometime during next week, but if you want to read our first impressions, feel free to check it out and post your comments.
