Windows 10 20H2 is very likely to be just a small update

Microsoft is now giving the very last finishing touches to Windows 10 version 2004, or the May 2020 Update, and this is one of the most anticipated updates in a long time for a good reason.

The current version of the operating system, also known as version 1909 or November 2019 Update, is just a minor update that brought changes mostly under the hood, with only a few new features for Windows 10 users.

Described as a “service pack,” Windows 10 version 1909 signaled the debut of a new release strategy for Microsoft, as many believed the company would switch to a new plan that would come down to major Windows 10 feature updates in the spring and then minor releases in the fall.

And by the looks of things, the same approach is going to be used this year too, as the fall of 2020 update could be just another “service pack” kind of release.

Windows 10 version 2009

WL has spotted evidence that indicates the fall of 2020 Windows 10 update would come with an enablement package, which means that Microsoft would introduce smaller changes for users that would then be activated by the company gradually. This is the same approach that was used for version 1909 and which essentially makes the two most recent Windows 10 feature updates nearly identical, all with the exception of the changes enabled by this enablement package.

Whether or not Microsoft is indeed planning to use this approach for Windows 10 version 2009 is something that still remains to be seen, but for the time being, all signs indeed seem to be pointing in this direction.

And at some level, this truly makes sense, as the “service packs” would be supposed to further polish the Windows 10 experience overall, which comes in handy after major updates that are entirely focused on new features.
