The app is now available in the Windows Phone Store

Microsoft launched an update for Windows Phone last month to fix a critical issues hitting a number of devices that reportedly rebooted all of a sudden for no clear reason.

Only a few models got it though, including the flagship Lumia 930, but it turns out that the issue is actually affecting many more devices, so the company has rolled out a dedicated app in the Windows Phone Store that allows those whose phones are affected to quickly fix the problem.

The so-called Stop Restart app is built as a wizard, so it’s not really hard to use it because you only have to press the next button until you’re done.

Microsoft says that the app automatically checks if your device received the update, and in case it didn’t, it proceeds to fixing the random reboot error all by itself.

“Microsoft identified a problem in some versions of Windows Phone 8.1 that could cause a phone to restart periodically. We've already made a fix that has resolved this problem for the majority of Windows Phones. However, some phones that have not connected to Microsoft servers still need the fix to be applied,” the company explains.

Still not working for everyone

The biggest problem right now is that some phones are still not getting the fix and they’re still rebooting all of a sudden. Posts published online reveal that using the Stop Restart app makes no difference on a number of devices, but it’s not yet clear whether this is a widespread issue or not.

In the meantime, all those whose devices are seeing the random reboot error are recommended to both check for new updates and install any if available, and download the Stop Restart app to see if it fixes the issue.
