As it prepares to discontinue an existing model

Microsoft has just launched a new Surface Laptop, as the company continues adjusting its device lineup with upgraded configurations.

Starting today, customers can purchase the Surface Laptop with an Intel Core i5 processor paired with 8GB RAM and 128GB SSD storage for just $999. This is the same price that was used before for the same configuration with 4GB RAM, but which is now listed as out of stock and expected to be discontinued very soon.

As Neowin reports, this is an approach that Microsoft has previously used for the Surface Pro as well, when the company removed the 4GB RAM configuration and replaced it with an upgraded version featuring 8GB.

The Surface Laptop with i5 chip and 8GB RAM can be ordered in Platinum only, while the Burgundy, Cobalt Blue, and Graphite Gold versions are offered with 256GB SSD storage and much more expensive starting at $1,299.

Existing configurations

At this point, the Surface Laptop can be ordered in five different configurations with an Intel Core i5 chip, the top of which features 256GB SSD storage and 8GB RAM with Intel HD Graphics 620. It’s available for $1,299.

On the other hand, there are no less than nine configurations with an Intel Core i7 processor, and this time, the top-of-the-range model comes with 1TB SSD storage, 16GB RAM and Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640. Of course, this is also the most expensive Surface Laptop that you can purchase right now, with a price of no less than $2,699.

Microsoft changing the base i5 configuration is good news for customers, as they can technically purchase an upgraded model for the same price as before. This means they get more value for the money, though it goes without saying that those who want the best of the best can look at the i7 configurations available for the Surface Laptop.
