Microsoft’s first major Windows 11 update also includes the new Notepad, an app that’s been in testing for a while as part of the Windows Insider program.

Just as expected, the modern version of Notepad comes with all the bells and whistles of a modern app, so it includes not only a UI refresh that aligns with Windows 11 but also new features that users are going to love.

One of the most important additions is support for a dark mode, so for the first time in history, Notepad can go dark, literally.

The app can also follow the system settings, so if you want Notepad to align with the rest of the operating system, it can automatically switch to light or dark modes as per Windows’ instructions.

Available right now from the Microsoft Store

“Like physical notepads around your house, the Notepad app is designed to be a simple companion for all your basic notetaking needs. The redesigned user interface feels both fresh, with new design features from Windows 11, and familiar, with the hallmark simplicity and ease of use Notepad is known for,” Microsoft says.

“In addition to design updates, we added dark mode, so the app feels more cohesive with your Windows experience. If your default system theme is Dark Mode, Notepad will automatically adopt the dark theme, or you can also select the app theme manually from the new settings page. Menus have also been simplified to make it easier to find the actions you want to take in the app, and we’ve added new highly requested features like multi-level undo, colorful emojis, and a modern and efficient find-and-replace experience.”

The new and modern Notepad app does not replace the classic version on Windows 11, so it must be downloaded manually from the Microsoft Store. Microsoft hasn’t revealed if it plans to kill off the classic Notepad at some point in the future.
