Sunrise is officially retired, full focus on Outlook

Microsoft has killed the Sunrise calendar app for iOS, Android, Mac, and the web, as the company completed the feature transition to Outlook and is now moving focus to its in-house application for all these platforms.

Redmond purchased Sunrise last year and started implementing all of its features into Outlook, in an attempt not necessarily to shut down the original app, but to continue offering users a powerful calendar application without compromising their experience due to the lack of options.

Sunrise announced in the last blog posted on its website that all users are being logged off from the application, and their data is saved on the original platform they were using, including Gmail, iCloud, Outlook or others.

The final goal is to move all Sunrise users to Microsoft’s Outlook, and the software giant promises that all features have already been implemented into its own app to make the transition seamless.

“This is definitely the end of an era. But more importantly, it’s the beginning of a new one. We’re excited by what’s ahead and we’d love for you to come and join us in our latest adventure. We’ve kept our promise to bring the magic of Sunrise to the Outlook calendar - and the Outlook inbox while we were at it - and we’re only getting started,” the Sunrise team wrote.

New Outlook calendar app

The updated Outlook client is already available for download on iOS and Android with new features such as the so-called “Interesting Calendars” which allows users to subscribe to calendars that are relevant to them. You can, for instance, subscribe to your hometown sports team’s calendar and get updates right in the app whenever they play a new game.

Additionally, the app also brings event icons to help you manage the agenda in a much more effective way, and Microsoft says that it has added some new icons on top of the ones offered by Sunrise.

Certainly, with Sunrise finally sunsetting, it’ll be interesting to see if Outlook does manage to become the app of choice for all users, but with Microsoft investing so much in it, there’s no doubt that the software giant is going to be very disappointed if this doesn’t happen.
