Microsoft has just announced a major overhaul of Skype, as it tries to build a better rival for popular instant messaging solutions like iMessage, Snapchat, and WhatsApp.

Baptized "the next generation of Skype," the application is getting features that are clearly inspired from competitors, including a so-called Highlights feature very similar to Snapchat's stories.

Known mostly for video and voice calling, Skype is now migrating towards instant messaging with updates that allow users to chat with their contacts using enhanced tools, including a capture option to take a photo and share it instantly. Holding down the shutter button starts recording a video that can be then customized with stickers, annotations or other goodies, and shared with contacts, as is the case on Snapchat.

The revamped interface also includes options to make conversations more interactive by adding YouTube videos or Giphy animations in a message.

Snapchat stories-like feature

The Highlights feature works just like you'd expect it to work, and allows you to create a story by selecting a collection of photos or videos that are displayed to your friends. They can reply with reactions (emoji) to your posts.

"Highlights lets you create a highlight reel of your day with photos and videos, so you can share everyday moments. To post a Highlight, swipe to access your camera, take a photo or video, then post it to your Highlights or send it directly to your contacts or groups. Once you post a Highlight, your friends and family can react to it with emoticons or by jumping into a conversation. The new Skype is your canvas, and now you’re free to share in more expressive ways with your closest friends, family and groups," Microsoft explains.

The whole interface has been redesigned as well, and users can customize the looks of the app and the conversations, with colors, themes, and new animations that seem to appeal specifically to teens. The call interface has received an overhaul as well, and there are options to even drag and drop people into conversations.

The new Skype, which has been in preview on Android and iOS, is now going live in stages for mobile users running Google's platform. iOS and Windows will follow soon, with Microsoft saying that mobile is the priority right now, with desktop to follow when the original rollout stage is complete.
