Redmond extends MacBook trade-in program

Microsoft launched a trade-in program earlier this month to convince Apple users to give up on their MacBooks and instead buy a Surface, and the company has just extended the end date for a reason that’s yet to be disclosed.

Originally supposed to end on November 7, the trade-in program will now run through November 23, obviously while supplies last (so if you don’t hurry up, you might not be able to take advantage of this offer and get a Surface in exchange for your MacBook).

The plan here is to convince MacBook users to switch to Microsoft Surface by offering them substantial discounts when giving up on their Apple devices, but for the moment, it’s not known how many buyers actually purchased new Windows 10 devices using this offer.

Up to $650 in store credit

And yet, Microsoft is giving quite impressive price cuts if you bring in a used MacBook and depending on production year, model, working condition and available accessories, you could receive as much as $650.

“To be eligible for trade-in, you must own the qualifying device, device must power on battery must hold charge and not be required to be plugged in to operate, and be in fully functional, working condition without broken/missing components, cracked display/housing, liquid damage, modification(s) or have device warranty seal broken to be considered working. Cannot be password protected, and include original chargers/accessories. Must contain hard drive,” Microsoft explains.

The store credit that customers receive can be used for the purchase of a Surface Pro 4 or a Surface Book, as both of them are positioned as direct MacBook competitors, although they provide more functionality, such as touch support.

The trade-in offer is only available in the United States and, for the moment, there are no plans to expand it beyond its borders, although there are many people out there who’d happily give up on their old MacBooks for a new Surface model.
