A fix is currently in the preview program

One of the issues Microsoft has recently acknowledged concerns the way passwords are stored in the OS, as the company said in some cases, Outlook and other apps won’t remember your passwords.

And this apparently happens on Windows 10 version 2004 after installing Windows updates, with the company explaining in an advisory that the whole thing is caused by some specific tasks running on the system. So the workaround is to just disable these tasks until a fix lands.

The good news is the fix is already being tested as part of the Insider program, according to a Microsoft engineer, though for now, an ETA as to when it could go live for everybody is not yet available.

“This issue occurs when some Windows 10 Task Scheduler Tasks are configured in a certain way.  Until a fix is available a workaround is to disable these tasks using Task Scheduler,” Microsoft says.

Fix on its way

Eric Lawrence, Microsoft Edge Program Manager, explains in a post (via WL) that only a small number of devices have actually been affected by this problem.

“1. This issue in Windows affects only a comparatively small number of users with S4U tasks.2 . This issue is fixed in the latest Windows 10 insider channel. 3. This issue is slated to be fixed in an upcoming update for all Windows 10 users,” he said.

As said, the workaround that you can use in the meantime comes down to disabling the scheduled tasks that cause the problem, and full instructions on how to do it are provided on the page mentioned above.

What you need to know, however, is that you may have to re-enter the missing passwords after applying the workaround, simply because you need Windows to be provided with the phrase once again before actually saving it.
