Fix for slower SMBC read performance now in testing

Microsoft has managed to resolve another big Windows 11 2022 Update bug, though for the time being, the fix is only available for insiders in the Dev channel.

More specifically, Microsoft’s Ned Pyle says the most recent build that was shipped to Dev channel insiders comes with a fix for the slower SMB read performance glitch affecting large files in Windows 11 version 22H2.

The issue was first shipped to users back in late November, also in the Windows Insider program, with Pyle originally explaining that everybody running the new OS version would get it in a future cumulative update.

The most recent Windows 11 preview build, however, comes with an improved version of this fix. And once again, users who aren’t part of the Windows Insider program should get the same improvements at a later time with the release of a cumulative update for Windows 11.

“An updated version of this preview fix is now available in Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 25267. This version "Fixed an issue where restartable copies of a file (for example using robocopy) with alternate data streams were hanging frequently in the latest Dev Channel builds." The final fix for Windows 11 22H2 production computer will come in a normal monthly Cumulative Update through Windows Update once validated in Insider builds,” Ned Pyle announced recently.

Worth knowing, however, is that the issue is exclusive to Windows 11 version 22H2, an operating system version that’s still rolling out to users out there.

Eligible devices can be updated with a manual check for updates in Windows Update, but otherwise, the automatic rollout is yet to reach the broad availability stage. There’s no ETA as to when this could happen, but for now, if you want to download the 2022 Update, it’s enough to just head over to Windows Update and press the Check for updates button.
