Microsoft’s new browser is the runner-up right now

Microsoft Edge is Microsoft’s big long-term bet in the browser world, and after the demise of Internet Explorer and the switch to Chromium, the company’s efforts in this regard can only go in one direction.

Edge is therefore the Microsoft browser that you need to try out, though according to the latest market share data, the sometimes aggressive measures that the company has turned to last year didn’t necessarily help.

While Google Chrome is by far the leading choice when it comes down to finding a new browser for your computer, Microsoft Edge continues to be the runner-up with a market share of a little over 10 percent.

That’s not the problem though.

The more concerning thing for Microsoft is that the adoption of Edge is improving at a very slow pace, with a year-over-year comparison showing that the browser gained only a 2 percent share in 2022.

As noted by Neowin, Google Chrome has managed to maintain its dominating score, but despite Microsoft Edge being promoted to the default Windows browser and Microsoft insisting on its capabilities throughout the year, few people actually decided to stick with it.

This isn’t necessarily a problem for Microsoft, especially because Edge is now considered a fully featured alternative to Google Chrome.

But these numbers once again show that dethroning Google Chrome isn’t only difficult but most likely impossible as well. Chrome, which managed to improve its market share to recorded levels, at one point exceeding 70 percent, has long been considered the only good browser, especially because Microsoft’s efforts in this category came down to Internet Explorer.

Mozilla Firefox continues to be the third browser in the charts, often considered the only alternative to Chromium-powered browser, but its market share is declining as well.
