New features to debut in the next builds, Microsoft promises

An update for Skype Preview in Windows 10 PC and Mobile was released to users enrolled in the Windows Insider program earlier this week and now Microsoft promises more such updates in the coming builds, providing us with a glimpse into the feature lineup to be available soon.

Also known as Messaging Everywhere, this feature makes it possible for users to send and receive SMS from a PC where the user is logged in with the same account as on a mobile device where Skype is the default messaging app.

Although this feature is expected to make its full debut in Redstone 2, Microsoft says that consumers will get an update for Skype Preview that would provide such functionality over the next couple of months.

New features on their way

One of the new features is improved messaging, with Microsoft explaining that users will soon get message sent status, copy and paste quoted messages, read/unread line indicator, preview a URL in chat, keyboard shortcuts, drag and drop of files and photos, drag and drop of URLs from browsers, and video messaging. This should make Skype Preview a fully featured messaging app, bringing it closer to the desktop version also available on Windows.

Additionally, Skype Preview will get easier calling options, with users to be allowed to start calls or conversations from the profile page. Furthermore, group calls will continue even when the initiator leaves the conversation, Microsoft says, while adding that audio and video device settings and loudspeaker improvements will also be offered.

And last but not least, Windows 10 Mobile users will also get exciting updates, including a transparent tile (yes!), improved back button navigation, as well as changes that will make video calls to default to loud speaker.

There’s no timing as to when all these improvements could land, but for the moment Microsoft is testing them internally and it’s certainly good news for Windows 10 users that Skype is taking shape quite nicely.
