One of the top features announced by Microsoft at the company’s hardware event last October was the possibility of creating 3D content with a Windows phone, promising that such functionality would arrive first on Windows 10 Mobile devices with the Creators Update and then on Android and iOS at a later time.

And yet, it looks like the company is not yet ready to introduce the 3D content creation app for Windows phones, so the upcoming Creators Update that will be delivered to Windows 10 Mobile devices won’t include it.

In a statement for MSPU, Microsoft confirms that the plan continues to be shipping this app, though no ETA and other specifics can be provided at this point.

“The capability to capture objects from your world in 3D using the camera on your phone is not one of our Creators Update features. As we shared in October, we envision the functionality being available across platforms, and we’re working to bring to mobile devices in the future,” a company spokesperson was quoted as saying.

How 3D content creation worked

Unfortunately, the app allowing Windows phone users to create 3D content by scanning a real object was one of the top features announced during the 2016 event, and many people saw this as living proof that Microsoft was still committed to mobile devices.

The demo was made on an HP Elite X3, which is currently one of the top Windows phones out there, and presented how 3D content could be created by using the device’s camera to scan a real object and then have the 3D generated image imported in the new Paint 3D app for further edits and modifications.

The Creators Update will launch on PCs on April 11, while mobile phones will get it at a later time. The rollout will take place in stages, and there is no ETA as to when the release for mobile phones is planned.
