14 DAY TRIAL // The Windows 10 Anniversary Update landing on August 2 will bring the eagerly anticipated support for extensions in Microsoft Edge browser on PCs, but it turns out mobile devices will have to wait longer to get this super requested feature.
Back at Build 2015, Microsoft confirmed that it wanted to bring extensions on mobile devices too but clearly stated that it first wanted to get them right on PC and only then go forward with the plan to launch them on smartphones too.
And recent updates made to the Microsoft’s Roadmap site confirmed that extension support was in the works for mobile devices, giving hope to everyone that this feature could go live sooner than expected. Unfortunately, however, the most recent update to this website (via MSPU) indicates that browser extensions for Microsoft Edge on Windows 10 Mobile have been delayed, so it’s hard to say at the moment whether they’ll ever make it to smartphones.
Coming in Redstone 2?
And yet, there are big chances to see Windows 10 Mobile getting browser extension support in the second wave of the Redstone update coming out in spring 2017, as work on this feature probably continues behind closed doors.
Redstone 2 is believed to bring new features that weren’t ready for the first wave, and this perfectly makes sense in the case of extensions for Windows 10 Mobile. Furthermore, Microsoft has promised “more cool things” for Windows phones in 2017, and the Surface Phone is expected to go live early next year too, so such a release would be perfectly aligned with the arrival of extensions.
Certainly, there’s more to find out about Microsoft’s plan for extensions on Windows 10 Mobile, but for the moment, just don’t get your hopes too high to receive them in the coming months. Hopefully, Microsoft hasn’t abandoned the project, and extensions could land on our Windows phones sometime around the debut of the next Redstone wave.
