Production might be stopped this year, source points

Rumor has it that Microsoft is planning to give up on the Lumia brand, as people with knowledge of the matter previously said that no new Lumia phones would be released, with the company switching focus to the super eagerly awaited Surface Phone.

And now a new report claims that the Lumia brand could actually be phased out in December, when the company might plan to end production and even stop sales.

While it doesn’t make sense for Microsoft to stop selling Lumia phones until all inventories are clear, we could see Microsoft no longer producing phones under the Lumia brand, especially as we’re moving closer to the rumored release date of the Surface Phone.

And clearing out inventories is what Microsoft has been trying to do lately, as the software giant has offered plenty of discounts on its top models, including the Lumia 950 and 950 XL.

Supporting the ecosystem

Certainly, however, this is just a rumor, and we should all take it with a healthy pinch of salt because, with Microsoft remaining tight-lipped on everything mobile these days, it’s still hard to predict what the company will do next.

More recently, the company removed the Lumia section from its store front page, making everyone believe that it is finally ready to step away from this brand.

As far as official statements are concerned, Microsoft has never said that it won't continue releasing Lumia phones, but it hasn’t confirmed that new devices under this brand will be launched either. The only thing it has said and reiterated on pretty much every occasion is that Microsoft will support Windows 10 Mobile and partners who want to build devices running this operating system.

Unfortunately, not too many partners seem to be interested in releasing Windows phones these days, and although there are a few very good devices on the market, such as the HP Elite X3, choices are pretty limited right now, especially when it comes to high-end phones.
