Microsoft has automatically enabled Windows Spotlight by default on some Windows Insider PCs running Windows 11, as the company wants to see if this configuration makes sense going forward.

Windows Spotlight has been around for a while in modern Windows, and it allows for the wallpaper to be automatically refreshed with a high-def image provided by Microsoft. Until now, however, Windows Spotlight only worked on the lock screen.

In the Windows Insider program, however, Windows Spotlight evolved to also include the desktop, and now Microsoft is running additional experiments to see how it can further polish refine the experience with this feature.

Enabling it by default is one way to do this, Microsoft says, but for the time being, this behavior is only available for a very limited set of insiders.

“We are trying out Windows Spotlight on desktop is on by as the default background for new devices (clean installs using the ISO) and for upgrades where the background the Windows 11 default. We are trying this experience out with a limited number of Windows Insiders at first,” the company explains.

Hello, 4K wallpapers!

Most likely, the same configuration will be enabled for everybody sooner rather than later, though no ETA is available at this point.

At the same time, Microsoft has also enabled 4K wallpapers on the desktop, and once again, this feature is in its early days, so it’s not available for all users. This is truly something that comes in handy, especially since the number of 4K displays out there is rapidly growing.

“We are also trying out displaying 4K desktop backgrounds in Windows Spotlight. We are also trying this experience out with a limited number of Windows Insiders at first,” the company explained without offering an estimate as to when all users could get their hands on this cool update.
