Microsoft continues work on Windows 10 at full speed ahead of the July 29 launch, and today the company has confirmed that RTM is not yet ready and PC makers haven’t received the final version of the operating system.

Windows 10 is projected to reach RTM tomorrow, according to sources close to the company’s plans, so Microsoft still has some work to do on the operating system before pushing it to OEMs to install it on their PCs, laptops and tablets.

A company spokesperson has confirmed in a statement for Bloomberg that PC makers are yet to get the final bits of Windows 10, but no additional information has been provided, as the company plans to finalize work on the operating system as soon as possible.

What happens after RTM

Once RTM is ready, Microsoft can finally send the operating system to OEMs to install it on their devices, which are scheduled to launch on July 29 together with Windows 10 too. Terry Myerson, head of the Windows team, detailed the whole process in a blog post two weeks ago.

“Soon, we will give a build of Windows 10 to our OEM partners so they can start imaging new devices with Windows 10. The new devices our partners are working on are very exciting, I can’t wait to hear your feedback as you get a chance to use them,” Myerson explained.

“Soon after, we will distribute a build of Windows 10 to retailers all over the world, so they can assist their customers with upgrades of newly purchased devices that were originally imaged with Windows 8.1. Look for this sticker for assurance that our OEM partners have proactively tested a device for compatibility with Windows 10.”

With Windows 10 still in the works two weeks ahead of launch, the biggest problem now become the limited amount of time that manufacturers have to deploy Windows 10 on their devices. Some could miss the deadline and not make their products available on day 1, but Microsoft says that at least Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Acer should bring new PCs in stores on July 29.
