Phones with 4GB of storage cannot get the update

Windows 10 Mobile will require at least 5GB of storage space when it is released later this year, according to an update Microsoft has silently made to one of its official pages, and this means that a number of devices with less storage won't be able to get it.

Yesterday, it emerged that Windows 10 Mobile could only work on devices with at least 8GB of storage space, so a number of Windows Phone models coming with 4GB of storage, such as the Lumia 530, don't have enough space to download and install the new OS.

In an update made to the Lumia storage space page (via WMPU), Microsoft reveals that Windows 10 Mobile requires approximately 5GB of available memory, so it's pretty clear that, unless some super advanced compression method is found, 4GB devices won't be upgraded to Windows 10.

According to this Microsoft page, devices with 8GB of storage space will have only 3GB available after installing Windows 10 Mobile, while those with 16GB can only use 10GB after the upgrade is performed. 32GB devices will be left with just 25GB.

512MB RAM devices will get the update though

Microsoft previously explained that Windows 10 Mobile devices would be released to both low-end and flagships, but the company only referred to the amount of RAM memory and not to storage space.

Redmond said that, although it's a completely new release, Windows 10 Mobile should be able to run on devices with only 512MB of RAM too, admitting, however, that a number of features would be missing because of the obvious hardware limitations.

As far as the storage space is concerned, Microsoft has made no statement until now, but it's pretty clear that devices with less than 8GB will have a hard time installing the new OS, unless Microsoft develops a new compression system or removes apps and features that take too much space on the phone.
