Previous rumors claimed the project might be on hold

We reported last week that Microsoft could abandon Project Astoria because Android porting was not going as planned.

Sources inside Microsoft claimed the company didn't find the right way to come forward with an official statement yet, but that Project Astoria might be on hold indefinitely.

Now Re/code reports that Microsoft confirmed this weekend that some of the information leaked last week was accurate but did not say anything about the future of the project.

“The Astoria bridge is not ready yet, but other tools offer great options for developers. We’re committed to offering developers many options to bring their apps to the Windows Platform,” said Microsoft in a statement.

The company went on to add that the tools for Web and iOS devs were now ready and that another option would be coming soon to allow older Windows apps to run on phones and tablet.

Microsoft is still not offering a clear answer for the moment

However, the Microsoft representative declined to comment on whether or not Project Astoria was on hold, delayed, or canned, so we will have to wait a while longer until the Redmond-based company decides what to do with it.

Since the Android subsystem got removed from the latest versions of Windows 10 Mobile preview builds, we don't expect Project Astoria to be anywhere near ready by the time Microsoft launches the new version of its mobile platform.

Also, Microsoft is now focusing on Windows 10 Mobile launch and delivering updates for most Lumia smartphones running Windows Phone 8.1.

So, it will probably take some time until we hear more about Project Astoria unless Microsoft decides to make its demise official very soon.

Until then, Windows Phone developers should rest easy as Windows 10 Mobile won't be bombarded with Android apps right away.
