This time, Windows Server is the one affected

Microsoft has just confirmed a new glitch caused by the most recent cumulative updates released by the company as part of the Patch Tuesday rollout.

This time, however, only Window Server is affected, with the software giant confirming that the problem exists on Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2016, Windows Server 2019, Windows Server version 20H2, and Windows Server 2022.

“After you install the June 14, 2022 or a later Windows update, operations related to shadow copies (creation or deletion) on an Application Server running VSS aware Server Applications that store data on remote SMB 3.0 or later file shares may fail for SMB shares hosted on a File Server,” the company says.

“After installing the June 14, 2022 or later Windows update, backup applications may receive error E_ACCESSDENIED while executing operations related to shadow copy creation. Additionally, a FileShareShadowCopyAgent Event 1013 is logged in the Microsoft-Windows-FileShareShadowCopyAgent/Operational channel (enabled by default) on the File Server.”

What’s causing the whole thing

There are several reasons why the glitch could occur, and Microsoft says that in some cases, the shadow copy creation operation fails if the Application Server is running an older version (before the June 14 release) and the File Server has already been updated.

Needless to say, the workaround is pretty simple in this case, as users just need to install the latest updates on the Application Server and the File Server.

Furthermore, the same error could be encountered if the account that used for the copy operations does not align with the privilege requirements for Administrators or Backup Operators.

And last but not least, Microsoft says the same problem could be encountered when the account used to perform the shadow copy operation is a local account that only has Administrator or Backup Operator privileges on the File Server.
