Windows 10X features to be integrated into Windows 10

Windows 10X was Microsoft’s ambitious operating system supposed to power the dual-screen PC experience, including the software giant’s very own Surface Neo.

The debut of the operating system, however, has been pushed back several times, with Microsoft eventually promising to bring Windows 10X to the market first only for single-screen devices, while dual-screen computers were supposed to receive it at a later time.

Expected this spring, Windows 10X has been abandoned for good, and in a blog post this week, John Cable, Vice President, Program Management, Windows Servicing and Delivery, confirms its features would eventually be bundled with Windows 10.

More Windows 10X features in Sun Valley

Cable doesn’t specifically say the Windows 10X project got the ax, as he explains that the company wants to use the technology available in this operating system in a more useful way.

“Instead of bringing a product called Windows 10X to market in 2021 like we originally intended, we are leveraging learnings from our journey thus far and accelerating the integration of key foundational 10X technology into other parts of Windows and products at the company,” Cable said.

“In fact, some of this is already reflected in the core of Windows in Windows Insider preview builds, for example the new app container technology we’re integrating into products like Microsoft Defender Application Guard, an enhanced Voice Typing experience, and a modernized touch keyboard with optimized key sizing, sounds, colors and animations. Our teams continue to invest in areas where the 10X technology will help meet our customer needs as well as evaluate technology experiences both in software and hardware that will be useful to our customers in the future.”

More parts of Windows 10X could eventually make their way to full Windows 10 with the release of the Sun Valley update in the spring, but the dual-screen operating system as a stand-alone product is pretty much dead right now.
