Microsoft has already turned the MVP Summit into an online-only event due to the coronavirus outbreak, and now the company is considering doing the same for other tech conferences as well.

In a notification posted on the website of upcoming shows, including Build and Ignite, Microsoft explains that no decision has been made just yet as to whether to cancel the events or not, but it continues to monitor the outbreak and look into the matter shortly.

Microsoft Build is projected to take place May 19-21 in Seattle, one of the US locations where the coronavirus has already been confirmed.

“In light of the global health concerns due to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), Microsoft is monitoring public health guidance in relation to in-person events. At this time, global health authorities have not issued guidance to avoid travel to this location,” Microsoft explains.

More information coming shortly

“We are looking carefully at our event calendar as well as our presence at industry events in the coming months. We are not taking decisions lightly, but the health and well-being of our employees, partners, customers and other guests remain our ultimate priority. We will continue to monitor and make any necessary changes as the situation evolves.”

If the conditions do not improve in the coming weeks, there’s a good chance Microsoft cancels this year’s Build and moves to an online-only event, with all announcements to be streamed online. Build is streamed online anyway, but this time the whole thing could happen with no attendees.

Of course, if Microsoft does decide to cancel the show, expect the company to refund everyone who purchased the tickets, but full information will be shared once more details in this regard are available. For now, Build is still on, but keep checking the event’s site to stay up-to-date with the latest announcements.
