The feature is now live in the Beta channel

Microsoft continues the work on Windows 11, and the most recent builds shipped to insiders in the Beta come with additional goodies for users.

As per the company’s new approach, Windows 11 Beta insiders are getting two new builds:

  • Build 22623.1255 = New features rolling out.
  • Build 22621.1255 = New features off by default.

The biggest change, on the other hand, is without a doubt the support for tabs in Notepad. This is one of the most important new features coming to Windows 11, and with this new release, it’s moving a step closer to the launch for production devices that are not enrolled in the Insider program.

Otherwise, the most recent Windows 11 Beta builds come with smaller improvements, including two fixes for the taskbar and the system tray, including for a problem that caused the Start menu to open behind the taskbar.

Windows 11 users are also getting further task manager polishing, including the following fixes:

Process names typed into the search box should no longer unexpected get spellchecked. Fixed a couple of issues with how Narrator was reading out content in Task Manager. Fixed an issue where the dropdowns in settings might not match your currently selected theme. When using search on the App History page, results should no longer suddenly disappear. If you open the Default Start Page dropdown in settings, clicking the Task Manager window should make the dropdown disappear now.

Needless to say, while tabs in Notepads are thus getting closer to an official release, you’d better not hold your breath for the new feature to land on production devices. Most likely, Microsoft will use the first Moment update of the year to bring Notepad tabs to users, and this is expected to happen at some point in the spring.
