Microsoft is getting ready to launch the third-generation Surface Book and naturally, the company is working hard to clear out the inventory before the highly-anticipated debut.

And while the Surface Book 2 is almost sold out at Microsoft, with many of the versions currently listed as out of stock, the company brought back a configuration that it launched back in 2017.

The Surface Book 2 powered by a seventh-generation Intel processor was replaced by an upgraded model in early 2019 when the company rolled out new configurations with the eight-gen series of processor.

Old-school cool

But now it looks like Microsoft wants to get rid of all the Surface Books that it still has around in order to make room for the new-generation model coming this month.

The 13.5-inch Surface Book 2 with a 7th Gen Intel Core i5 paired with 8 GB RAM and 256 GB storage is unlikely to stick around for too long, especially as Microsoft itself is preparing for the debut of the Surface Book 3.

The new-generation Surface Book will come with important upgrades in terms of hardware, so the latest Intel chips will once again be offered. The top-of-the-range configuration is expected to come with 32 GB RAM and possibly 2 TB of storage, but this is something that remains to be seen when the new devices go live.

In the meantime, what we do know for sure is that the Surface Book 3 will come with the same design as the current models, so aesthetically, there’s little improvement. But the biggest changes will happen under the hood, withe Surface Book to continue to be offered in two sizes with new-generation hardware and likely other optimizations.

An announcement is expected later this month, possibly at the Build digital conference.
