Users encouraged to upgrade to Windows 10

Microsoft has started its upgrade offensive against Windows 7 with a warning showing up on the desktop and reminding users of the upcoming end of support deadline set for January 14, 2020.

The notifications, which are powered by Windows update KB4493132, are supposed to make people aware that Windows 7 is reaching the end of life, but also to provide them with assistance as they migrate to supported Windows.

“After 10 years, support for Windows 7 is nearing the end,” the notification reads. “January 14, 2020 is the last day Microsoft will offer security updates and technical support for computers running Windows 7. We know change can be difficult, that’s why we’re reaching out early to help you back up your files and prepare for what’s next.”

The same notification also comes with a “Learn more” button that links to a Windows 7 page were users are recommended to upgrade to Windows 10.

Windows 7 works better on new hardware

Surprisingly, the desktop warning itself doesn’t mention Windows 10, but Microsoft hopes that by directing users to the said page, most of them would choose this version as their next destination.

Microsoft also advises users to buy new devices to enjoy the full benefits for Windows 10 and says that using the existing hardware on the new operating system “is not recommended.”

“While you could continue to use your PC running Windows 7, without continued software and security updates, it will be at greater risk for viruses and malware. Going forward, the best way for you to stay secure is on Windows 10. And the best way to experience Windows 10 is on a new PC. While it is possible to install Windows 10 on your older device, it is not recommended,” the company says.

The notification also includes an option to “not remind me again,” but Windows 7 users who want to make sure the warnings are blocked can just hide the update completely using the steps detailed here.
