Windows 10 now comes with ransomware protection, allowing users to back up their data in the cloud using the OneDrive engine straight from the operating system.

And with ransomware becoming a more prominent threat for computer users, Microsoft begins pushing harder for adopters of the latest version of Windows 10 to enable this feature.

A report from HTNovo reveals that the software giant has turned to Windows security alerts to highlight the importance of ransomware protection in Windows 10, recommending users to turn it on from Settings.

A Windows security alert shows up in the system tray on the Windows Defender Security Center (now called Windows Security) icon, and when opening the app, it encourages users to configure OneDrive in order to create automatic backups of certain files and thus be protected against ransomware.

This feature was originally added in Windows 10 April 2018 Update which launched earlier this year, but it looks like Microsoft wants more users to try it out after installing the upcoming October 2018 Update.

Windows 10 October 2018 Update

Every new Windows 10 feature update came with substantial security improvements, and by the looks of things, Microsoft wants to continue this approach with the upcoming October 2018 Update rolling out this month.

The company hasn’t yet revealed when this new OS version would begin shipping to users, but it’s believed that the public rollout could start as soon as the next week.

As it was the case of all the other feature updates for Windows 10, the release will take place in stages, as this allows Microsoft to resolve issues on specific sets of systems before shipping the new version. A manual download option will also be available for users who don’t want to wait, and it will most likely be powered by the Media Creation Tool developed by Microsoft.
