Microsoft has just presented the new Band at its devices event in New York, revealing a new design with a curved screen that's supposed to make it more comfortable on the wrist.

With a new slogan that reads “live healthier and achieve more,” the second-generation Microsoft Band is “optimized for individuals who want to work and stay fit.”

It can curve nicely around the wrist, Microsoft said, so they redesigned the display to match this. The display is scratch resistant, and the device comes with built-in GPS, guided workouts, notifications, and social updates.

Cortana is obviously available and “will keep you updated throughout the day with everything you need,” as Microsoft explained.

A new sensor

An eleventh sensor is now available: a barometer. You can measure elevation in real time, which is great for climbing or keeping an eye on how much effort you make when going home and walking up the stairs.

Of course, Microsoft Health is the core of everything Band, so it can provide an in-depth look at collected information. “It can help optimize workouts,” Microsoft says, “so I understand how my calories are burned during exercises.”

The Band 2 can also estimate VO2 based on collected data. “Only the Microsoft Band does this,” the company says.

If you're a golfer, the Band 2 can really come in handy because it helps you learn the game. It's all possible thanks to the built-in sensors, including the gyroscope, with the device then featuring a scorecard to keep an eye on how you performed.

Microsoft also praises the cross-platform functionality of Band 2, which works with Windows Phone, iOS, and Android devices thank to Bluetooth connectivity.

The Band 2 inherits most of the features available on the first model, but it does come with a fresh design that's supposed to make it more comfortable, plus a new sensor.

The Band 2 is up for pre-order today and shipments will begin on October 30. It costs only $249.
