Employees can work from home though March 25

Microsoft is now allowing employees in San Francisco and Seattle to work from home until March 25 due to the coronavirus outbreak, explaining that only those whose role is essential “to be in the office” should continue to go to their location.

The United States already has nearly 130 confirmed cases of coronavirus, including several close to Microsoft’s campus, so the company says it’s adjusting guidance accordingly to prevent the virus from spreading.

“We are recommending all employees who are in a job that can be done from home should do so through March 25th. Taking these measures will ensure your safety and also make the workplace safer for those that need to be onsite. Please let your manager know that you will be working from home, so all our teams remain well coordinated,” Microsoft says in an update published recently.

All locations are cleaned and sanitized, Microsoft says, and those who don’t know for sure if they must come to the office are recommended to reach out to their managers.

Everyone over 60, with an underlying health condition, pregnant, or with an immune system compromised must stay at home, Microsoft explains.

Wash your hands, stay home if sick

Meetings must be as short as possible and employees should stay at least 1.8 meters away from each other.

“Most importantly do not come to work if you are sick. This will be clearly posted on all building entrances,” Microsoft emphasizes.

Employees who believe they’ve been exposed to the coronavirus are told to contact the novel call center at 206-477-3977.

“Note for all employees globally: If you are receiving testing or have a confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19, please confidentially inform HR – we will assist in informing your manager and taking measures that protect others,” Microsoft says.

Further recommendations are expected to be published in the coming days, as the company continues to monitor the coronavirus outbreak.
