Windows 10 version 20H2 rollout reaches new phase

Microsoft has recently started the rollout of Windows 10 May 2021 Update, but at the same time, the company also announced that the previous release, known as Windows 10 version 20H2, is now ready for broad deployment.

The recommended servicing status is the Semi-Annual Channel, Microsoft says.

Given Windows 10 version 21H1 is still in its early days and not everybody can download it just yet, Windows 10 version 20H2 is the recommended stable release for organizations seeking broad deployment in their networks.

Windows 10 version 21H1 rolling out in stages

If your organization is waiting for version 21H1, the whole thing could really take a while, as Microsoft has just started the rollout, using a phased approach just like in the case of the previous updates.

In other words, not everybody is getting the new update right now, as Microsoft wants to make sure everything works according to the plan. So if the company discovers a certain bug during this phased rollout, it can very well prevent similar configurations from receiving the new OS update, therefore reducing the impact an issue could have on the Windows 10 computer base.

“In the current environment, we know that you continue to rely on your PCs more than ever. As a result, we are initially taking a measured seeker-based approach to the rollout of the May 2021 Update. We are throttling availability up over the coming weeks to ensure a reliable download experience for all, so the update may not be offered to you right away. Additionally, some devices might have a compatibility issue for which a safeguard hold is in place. In these cases, we will not offer the update until we are confident that you will have a good update experience,” Microsoft explains.

Eligible consumers can download Windows 10 May 2021 Update by manually checking for updates on Windows Update.
