The models should be a little bit more affordable

Microsoft launched Windows 10 S earlier this month on the Surface Laptop, but it turns out that the company is very committed to making the operating system available on some other devices, including its existing Surface models.

CVP Yusuf Mehdi has explained in an interview that the Windows 10 S version of the Surface Laptop is just the beginning of a wider range of devices running the operating system, confirming that new SKUs of the Surface Book and the Surface Pro are already on their way.

This means Microsoft will soon expand the Surface product range with some new devices running Windows 10 S, and naturally, they will be aimed at the education market since this is the goal of the operating system in the first place.

More affordable versions

“We had to start somewhere. The Surface Laptop, that was the right time to introduce the operating system. We had it on some low-end devices, and we wanted to put it on a premium machine to show the future. We don’t just think of it as a Chrome operating system. This is full-fledged,” Mehdi said.

The new Windows 10 S versions of the Surface Book and the Surface Pro should be a bit cheaper than the Windows 10 Pro siblings, though Microsoft could decide to sell them at the same price and then offer the upgrade to the Pro SKU free of charge.

Otherwise, the new devices could be more affordable, but instead have Microsoft charge customers should they want to perform the transition to the full version of Windows 10.

At this point, there is no ETA as to when the new Windows 10 S versions of Surface devices could launch, but given the fact that Microsoft is targeting educators with this operating system, expect them to see daylight close to the fall when the new school year is about to begin.
