Latest build includes additional taskbar refinements

The Windows taskbar has received a major makeover with the release of Windows 11. The icons are now centered, with the Start menu also leaving its original place in the left lower corner for an approach that’s inspired by Windows 10X.

For many people out there, all these changes have been rather confusing, but it’s obviously just a matter of time until everybody gets used to the new approach.

Since the release of Windows 11, Microsoft has been working non-stop on further refining the taskbar experience, and one of the biggest announcements was the introduction of drag and drop support. As a feature that should have been there from the very beginning, the drag and drop support is now getting additional polishing as part of the Windows Insider program.

Windows 11 build 22581, which was pushed to insiders in the Dev and Beta channels earlier this week, introduced drag and drop support for auto-hidden taskbars as well.

Other fixes have also been included, Microsoft explains.

“Made a fix for another issue causing taskbar previews to use the wrong fonts for the window title in languages other than English. Drag and drop to taskbar should now work with auto-hidden taskbars. When dragging something to pin to the taskbar, the message on the dragged item (for example, displaying an X if it’s not supported) will now have rounded corners. Mitigated an issue where swiping to collapse the tablet-optimized taskbar might unexpectedly invoke the widgets board,” the company said in the official changelog of this latest build.

All these improvements are currently part of builds shipped in the Windows Insider program, but some of them could make their way to production builds with the release of quality updates for Windows.

Microsoft hasn’t shared an ETA, as the company still wants to make sure everything is working exactly as expected.
