New improvements coming to Windows 10 users

After theme-aware live tiles in the Start menu, which are available today for everybody as part of the update to Windows 10 October 2020 Update, here come the theme-aware splash screen for apps.

More specifically, Microsoft announced in the most recent preview build of Windows 10 that it’s bringing a new design to splash screens, essentially allowing their look to match the one of the operating system. In other words, if you use the dark mode in Windows 10, then the splash screen is dark too. If you stick with the light mode, the light visual style is used too.

“Building on theme-aware tiles in Start, we’re introducing theme-aware splash screens for Universal Windows Platform (UWP) apps. Now, when an eligible UWP app is launched, the splash screen color will match your default app mode. For example, if you have light theme turned on, you’ll see a light theme splash screen, and if you have dark theme turned on (for the “default app mode”) then you’ll see a dark theme splash screen,” Microsoft explains.

At this point, only some apps come with a theme-aware splash screen, such as Settings, Calculator, Maps, Movies & TV, Office, and several others, but until the feature goes live for production devices, all Microsoft apps on Windows 10 should come with the same update.

Gradual rollout

Worth knowing is that not everybody running this preview build is getting the new feature, as Microsoft is just conducted a limited test for now, with the goal of making it available for everybody at a later time.

“This feature is rolling out to a subset of Insiders in the Dev Channel at first to help us quickly identify issues that may impact performance and reliability. Rest assured they will be gradually rolling out to everyone in the Dev Channel,” Microsoft explains.
