Unsurprisingly, Microsoft has just revealed the launch date of its next Battletoads game, and it's closer than we imagined. After 26 years, Battletoads return on August 20, and, as Microsoft revealed, the game will be available for free on Xbox Game Pass at launch.

Developed by Rare, the game promises to accommodate both newcomers and veterans to the series. For those unaware, the original Battletoads game is (in)famous for its difficulty. However, the new game, while maintaining the mayhem, it ensures that players have enough options to play at their own pace.

Basically, we should expect the upcoming Battletoads game to include different difficulty levels, which will allow those who lack split-second reflexes to beat it, at least that's what Microsoft suggests in the announcement. More importantly, Microsoft revealed that Battletoads will feature a couch co-op mode for up to three players that should make the game even easier.

Dlala’s new approach focuses on maintaining this mayhem while ensuring you have enough options to play at your own pace. That includes bringing in some buddies for couch co-op, which allows up to three players to drop in and out at will, along with difficulty settings designed to suit everyone from Tadpole to Battletoad. Just like before, you’ll be faced with hugely varied challenges as you play, including new vehicle sections and even some puzzle-solving this time around!

According to Microsoft, Battletoads will keep the same irreverent sense of humor that pays homage to self-aware cartoons of the late '90s. Also, the story was created by awarded writers and is delivered via several fully animated scenes that are voice acted.

More details about Battletoads will be revealed in the next couple of weeks, Microsoft promised, including gameplay footage, first glimpses of new collectible merchandise, and even exclusive giveaways, so stay tuned.
