Microsoft has announced its financial results for FY16 Q4, revealing a strong quarter for Windows, but continued decline for phones, a business that keeps on regressing due to weak sales.
Microsoft’s CEO Satya Nadella has praised the cloud business and explained that the company is continuously innovating, and this supports what he calls “the digital transformation.”
“This past year was pivotal in both our own transformation and in partnering with our customers who are navigating their own digital transformations,” points out Satya Nadella, Chief Executive Officer at Microsoft. “The Microsoft Cloud is seeing significant customer momentum and we’re well positioned to reach new opportunities in the year ahead.”
Strong Windows performance
Specifically, the Productivity and Business Processes division increased its revenue by 5 percent to no less than $7 billion, with the office consumer products and cloud services being the pioneer of the growth with 19 percent.
There are 23.1 million Office 365 consumer subscribers at this point, the company says, adding that Office 365 commercial revenue growth reached 54 percent in the last quarter.
The Intelligent Cloud unit also improved by 7 percentage points, and Azure revenue increased by no less than 102 percent, so Azure usage more than doubled year-over-year.
Finally, the More Personal Computing unit lost 4 percent and dropped to $8.9 billion, but Windows still increased by 27 percent despite the collapse of the PC market. Surface also had a strong quarter with revenues increasing by 9 percent, mostly thanks to the Surface Pro 4 and the Surface Book.
