Microsoft Word for the web is getting a major visual update

Let’s be honest about it: dark modes are the new cool thing in software, and as the world’s number one company in this sector, Microsoft knows this very well.

The software giant is therefore bringing dark modes pretty much everywhere, including Windows and the Office productivity suite.

And now the company has reached another important milestone: the dark mode in Word for the web is now available for all users who launch the app in their browsers.

“As we spend more and more time in front of screens – whether computers or mobile devices – it becomes increasingly important to reduce eye strain and accommodate light sensitivity. With Dark Mode, Word offers a dark color scheme for both the menu controls and the document background,” Microsoft announced this week.

“By bringing Dark Mode to Word for the web, we are modernizing your editing experience while also enabling you to extend your document session with less fatigue. Ever since adding Dark Mode support to Word on Windows and Mac, parity on the web has been a top request from Officer Insiders, and we’re excited to make it happen.”

Worth knowing is that the release of the dark mode in Word for the web comes with a series of known issues, including one related to the transition from the web to Office on Windows or Mac. Your dark mode settings aren’t migrated, so you need to enable them on each platform.

Furthermore, Microsoft says that users need to enable cookies to save their dark mode settings, and in some cases, pasting text in the app causes a white background to show up.

“Sometimes, when you copy text from another app in Dark Mode, the pasted text may appear as black text with a white background. To fix this issue, press CTRL+SHIFT+V, or paste CTRL+V and then select Paste Text Only in the Paste Options shortcut menu,” Microsoft explains.
