The Metro 2033 novel is going to become a movie, and it might hit theaters as early as 2022, with the help of the original writer.

Metro 2033 being turned into a movie complete a wide and loose circle that started with the Stalker novel by Boris and Arkady Strugatsky, who is the inspirational base for S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, and which also was made into a movie by the famous director, Andrei Tarkovsky.

Not many people remember that following the release of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, some of the people working for the GSC Game World studio left and formed 4A Games. They used their experience and developed Metro 2033, based on a novel by Dmitry Glukhovsky. Some resemblance can be spotted between the two games, but only in style.

Ready in 2022

Now, the Metro 2033 book is going to be turned itself into a movie, somehow closing a loop. According to a Variety report, Gazprom Media and the author Dmitry Glukhovsky are now working on the film.

In fact, the author refused for more than ten years to make his book into a movie, but he now thinks that it could be done. “In Russia, I didn’t see any producers who could make a good [screen adaptation of] this book. It just seemed impossible. But now I finally met a team that I can entrust ‘Metro’ with. Our ambitions turned out to be similar: to create a world-class blockbuster and stun even those who have read the trilogy and know it by heart. So as not to disappoint them, I am ready to become a creative producer of the movie and help create it with both my advice and action.”

Reportedly, shooting will start in 2020, but it’s unclear whether they are going for an international release. In any case, it will be interesting to see who the book will be translated into a film, and compare that with the gaming experience.
