Konami has dismissed early rumors about locking the Forwards Operation Base of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain behind a paywall. The Japanese publisher mentions that the initial set of options are available to all players and only some things are available for MB coins, which can be earned in the game or purchased through real-world microtransactions.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is set to launch next week, after spending quite a bit of time in development at Kojima Productions and Konami. The title already got a prologue experience in the form of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes last year and the first reviews for The Phantom Pain have already appeared yesterday.

The Forwards Operation Base isn't locked behind a paywall, Konami says

While most of them praised the gameplay, story, and other features, one mentioned that the Forwards Operation Base, which is an online competitive multiplayer experience, is locked behind a paywall, forcing players to spend MB coins to access it.

This, as expected, caused some heated debates and controversies online, especially since the game isn't available just yet.

In order to clear things up, Konami's Metal Gear Twitter account has issued a statement dismissing the paywall allegations. The Japanese company emphasizes that the initial set of FOB platforms don't require players to spend any MB coins.

The Phantom Pain players can earn coins without microtransactions

The studio also mentions that players can earn the aforementioned MB coins used in the FOB mode for some options by completing regular single-player story missions. Alternatively, they can opt to go for microtransactions and pay real-world money for the virtual currency and get things faster.

It's unclear just how many coins can be earned while playing the game and how many are available for those who spend actual cash.

You can expect to see some actual details once Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain launches on September 1 across PC, PS4, PS3, Xbox One, and Xbox 360 platforms.
