Samsung has recently announced the signing of another big name, this time coming from the automotive industry that so many tech giants are trying to expand to.

However, by appointing Hubert H. Lee, the former Chief Design Officer of Mercedes-Benz China, the South Koreans don’t necessarily want to become an automotive company.

Instead, the former Mercedes executive will lead several key projects for Samsung, including the creation of new Galaxy S and foldable models.

“Samsung Electronics today announced the appointment of Hubert H. Lee as EVP and Head of its MX (Mobile eXperience) Design Team. Having previously worked as Chief Design Officer of Mercedes-Benz China, Lee brings more than two decades of design and leadership experience to Samsung. At Mercedes-Benz, Lee was credited with leading many design projects and received multiple awards for his outstanding leadership of the company’s design teams in the United States and China,” the South Koreans said in a press release today.

Lee will therefore be in charge of the MX Design Team, which among others, is also responsible for bringing us super-popular products like the Galaxy S, foldables, Galaxy Tab tablets, and Galaxy Watch.

Needless to say, the former Mercedes design chief praised Samsung for what it described as the most beautiful products in the world.

“Samsung is known for building some of the world’s most beautiful products with designs that have transformed the mobile industry,” said Hubert H. Lee, “I am excited to join a company that is on the bleeding edge of mobile innovation and lead the team responsible for creating new mobile experiences through the art of design.”

A new Samsung Galaxy S model is projected to launch in January, but of course, the former Microsoft exec wasn’t involved in the way it looks – and according to people familiar with the matter, the Galaxy S23 will look exactly like the Galaxy S22.
