The Academy loves a good performance if it also involves some kind of transformation on part of the actor delivering it. Perhaps the most cited examples in this sense are Charlize Theron in “Monster” and Christian Bale in “The Fighter,” and most recently, Matthew McConaughey in “Dallas Buyers Club.”

For that role, of a man diagnosed with HIV, the actor lost a lot of weight, to the point where he bore no resemblance anymore to the tanned and ripped hunk the fans had come to know and love from his earlier rom-coms or paparazzi photos.

For his next movie, Matthew is going in the other direction. Alright alright alright!

Photos of an almost unrecognizable McConaughey, taken from a movie set in New York, have started making the rounds some hours ago, causing a serious buzz about how badly he must want another Oscar.

Hollywood is a very shallow place, so whenever an actor or actress is willing to forego their good looks, it’s deemed a sacrifice.

Matthew is now sporting a serious “dad bod” after gaining some weight and developing a paunch, but he’s also ditching his natural curls for a balding look. He’s shooting “Gold,” in which he plays a “struggling businessman” who teams up with a shady character (Edgar Ramirez) to search for gold in Indonesia.

These 2 photos from the set are from before they find anything, if they do find something at all, judging by McConaughey’s cheap suit. “Gold” will be out next year, in 2016.
