Matt Damon and Ben Affleck have been good friends for years. So now that Matt has started doing media interviews to promote Ridley Scott’s “The Martian,” in which he stars, he was probably expecting at least one question about Ben’s divorce and the controversy around it.

Whether he had the answer prepared or not doesn’t take anything from the fact that he managed to answer the question in a classy, polite way, without throwing his friend under the bus or coming off as judgy and mean.

Matt talks the Ben Affleck divorce

If we’re to believe the countless reports online, Matt would have had good reason to judge or publicly criticize Ben for the way he behaved, which led to the end of his 10-year marriage to Jennifer Garner.

As a refresh, it is said that he cheated on her with their children’s nanny, and that he did it even when the family was on vacation in the Bahamas and they were trying to see if their relationship still had a future. Afterwards, the nanny went to the tabloids with their story and he paid her to shut up.

Whether any of that is true, we won’t find out from Matt. Asked how his friend was doing by an Entertainment Tonight reporter (video below), Matt waxed poetic about marriage and how, sometimes, if the stars don’t align, it just doesn’t work.

“I think marriage is insane. It’s a crazy idea,” he says. “I love being married to my wife. I wouldn’t tell anybody else anything about their relationship. I’m lucky I found my wife. If there’s any secret it’s that, to feel lucky. But so much of it is out of your hands… I mean, I just had that conversation with my father this weekend. He says the same thing to me. Says it’s God’s grace, is what he said. Because you just don’t… get lucky.”

As Matt puts it, Ben and Jennifer simply didn’t have what it took to make it together.

“The Martian” is one of the most anticipated releases of the fall

It must bother Damon to have to take questions about his friend’s personal life when he’s in the chair to do an interview about his upcoming movie, but if it does, he’s not letting it show one bit.

As you can see in the video below, he’s his usual charming, talkative self - and the fact that he speaks so lovingly about his wife Luciana is an added bonus.

Back to “The Martian” though, it got a new trailer the other day and it’s slowly shaping up to be one of the most anticipated releases of the fall of 2015. Not only does it have Ridley Scott in the director’s chair and a story of an astronaut stranded on Mars, but it also boasts an impressive cast and, from what we’ve seen so far, superb visuals and an intriguing storyline.

You will find the trailer below as well. The film drops on November 25.
