Classic mix of role-playing and turn-based strategy

What does it take to become the most capable wizard of two linked realms? A good spell collection, surely, as well as capable armies that can occupy cities and generate resources. Maybe the help of a few capable heroes? Some alliances with other wizards? A focus on gaining control over as much of the world as possible? Or simply an ability to win tactical battles when the odds are not in your favor?

Master of Magic is developed by MuHa Games and Eerie Forest Studio, with publishing in the hands of Slitherine Ltd. I played a pre-launch version of it on the PC using Steam. This is a modern remake of the classic of the ‘90s, which works well for fans of the fantasy strategy space.

The game starts with players choosing from a range of wizards, 14 at launch, all capable of massive magical feats, prepared with a starting set of spells, and leading a particular fantasy race. Each of them originates in the realms of Arcanus or Myrror and it takes time to learn how to travel between them. The ultimate goal is to become the titular Master of Magic, which involves conflict, negotiation, careful use of resources, and the support of a well-developed empire.

Master of Magic craftily combines classic turn-based strategy with role-playing elements. On the overland map, armies move around, towns require management, and there are plenty of spells to research. When opposing wizard armies or neutral opponents stand in your way, it’s time for a classic turn and hex-driven battle.

Master of Magic is a good-looking strategy game, with a map that’s easy to read and enough detail for the units and the world. I love the screen that pops up whenever my wizard researches another massive spell and comes closer to world domination. The sound is a little limited, especially the combat soundtrack, which seems to have only one tune to work with.

Conclusion

Master of Magic can seem a little too classic for 2022 but the development team at MuHa Games has explained that it is aiming to deliver as faithful a remake of the classic title as possible. All the gameplay feels good, and the presentation is solid.

The range of potential wizard and faction choices should translate into a variety when it comes to tactical and strategic choices. Master of Magic is set to arrive on December 13, and I look forward to spending a few hundred turns trying to become the most powerful magic user in the two realms.
