14 DAY TRIAL // In May this year, Oscar-winner Matthew McConaughey hinted that he might be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as he had received various offers from the studio and had even read for some parts. If you were hoping this partnership would go through, Variety has bad news.
Apparently, the role that Marvel wanted McConaughey for was that of the villain in “Guardians of the Galaxy 2,” which will be out in theaters in 2017.
“The actor recently passed, leaving the search for that part still in progress,” the trade publication writes. “Sources say that decision should be made in the coming weeks, as production is expected to begin in early 2016.”
There’s no mention as to why McConaughey refused the offer, but it can’t have been money, since Marvel is known to throw that liberally around, especially at those actors who have a solid reputation and whom they want on board the MCU.
However, this wouldn’t be the first time that he refuses to be part of a successful franchise. If you recall, he dropped out of “Magic Mike 2,” which ended up being “Magic Mike XXL,” and reports claimed that he didn’t want to be associated with a blockbuster franchise now that he was an Oscar winner, because it was bad for his reputation.
Even if that’s not the case, there is a very good chance he’s being more cautious about the projects he signs on to, because he doesn’t want to disappoint expectations he set with “Dallas Buyers Club.” And Marvel movies tend to be considered less “work” and more “play.”
