Malwarebytes has just received an update to version 3.1, bringing an important list of improvements and fixes that users who are already running 3.0 should definitely have a look at.

Although not as popular as the likes of Bitdefender or Kaspersky security software, Malwarebytes has long been one of the most efficient antivirus solutions, offering an advanced malware detection engine that doesn’t hamper system resources in a critical way.

With version 3.0, however, some users have been complaining that Malwarebytes slowed down systems and CPU and RAM usage skyrocketed, so the update to version 3.1 is specifically aimed at improving performance in this regard. Furthermore, the development team focused on making the app load faster and be more responsive, but also on reducing the impact it has on the loading performance of third-party software.

New features in version 3.1

The new Malwarebytes version includes a new detection and protection module which, according to the company, uses machine learning to detect anomalies. This feature is gradually being rolled out to users, even though it appears to be enabled in the settings screen for everyone.

There are also several improvements for malware protection, though specifics here are not provided, as well as tweaks to the self-protection feature. From now on, administrator privileges are needed to disable protection or deactivate the license.

Starting with version 3.1, Malwarebytes launches an automatic scan on all drives once per month in an attempt to keep the computer protected and prevent any malware from reaching the PC.

What’s important to note is that Malwarebytes recommends users to download version 3.1 manually and install it over version 3.0, though the company notes that in some cases removing the older release might be needed to ensure a smooth update.

If you want to try out the new version, you can download Malwarebytes from Softpedia, but keep in mind that if something goes wrong, you can try removing the old version to perform a clean install.
